Underwater Navigator (PADI)
$800.00
Includes training plus required PADI/SDI student materials and certification fees.
The Underwater Navigator course builds the skills you need to stay oriented, confident, and deliberate on every dive. You’ll learn how to navigate using natural references and compass techniques, then apply them in real dive scenarios so you can plan routes, return accurately, and reduce stress underwater. Private instruction keeps the focus on precision, awareness, and repeatable habits you can rely on anywhere you dive.

Overview
The Underwater Navigator Specialty is designed for certified divers who want to stop “hoping they’ll find the boat” and start navigating with intention. You’ll learn to use natural references and a compass with precision, then apply proven patterns and distance estimation techniques so you can return accurately and dive with more confidence.
ScubaDives.com teaches adults-only and primarily private or semi-private (1–2 students). That format is ideal for navigation because you get more repetitions, more real-time correction, and a pace that matches your comfort level—without being rushed through exercises.
By the end, you’ll have a repeatable navigation process you can use on shore dives, reefs, wreck sites, and anywhere visibility or terrain makes orientation more challenging.

What You’ll Learn
- How to navigate using natural references (bottom features, light, surge, landmarks, and patterns)
- Compass basics for divers: setting headings, maintaining a bearing, and correcting for common errors
- Distance estimation methods (kick cycles, time, and situational factors that change your range)
- Common navigation patterns (out-and-back, square/rectangle, triangle, and multi-leg routes)
- How to navigate while making multiple turns and staying oriented throughout the dive
- How to plan a route that fits the site, conditions, and your gas/time limits
- Team procedures: staying together, communicating headings, and avoiding separation
- How to combine compass + natural navigation for more reliable results
- How to reduce task loading so navigation doesn’t compromise buoyancy or awareness
Why This Matters
- Better navigation reduces stress, improves decision-making, and keeps dives calmer and safer
- Accurate returns help prevent long surface swims and avoid unnecessary exertion
- Improved situational awareness lowers separation risk and strengthens buddy teamwork
- Stronger buoyancy and trim while navigating leads to better control and less environmental impact
- More deliberate route planning supports better air management and more enjoyable dives
Course Structure
- Consult and planning: We review your experience and goals, then choose a site that supports skill-building (clear reference points, safe depth profile, and manageable conditions).
- Knowledge development: Complete the required learning and review navigation concepts, common patterns, distance estimation, and how to avoid typical compass mistakes.
- Topside practice: You’ll practice compass handling and patterns on land before applying them underwater. This reduces task loading and improves accuracy once you descend.
- Open-water training dives: You complete three training dives focused on compass skills, natural navigation, and combined techniques, with coaching and debriefs between dives.
- Wrap-up: We consolidate your results into a simple, repeatable process you can use on future dives.
Time planning: Many students complete the course over 1–2 days (or 2–3 days depending on schedules, travel, and conditions). Your pace is based on comfort and performance—never rushed.

FAQ
How private is “private”?
Most sessions are one student. A private group is two students. That format gives you more repetitions and quicker improvement—especially for compass work and distance estimation.
Where do the training dives happen?
We select a site that supports skill-building: clear reference points, manageable conditions, and a safe depth profile. Shore or boat options depend on the area and your goals.
Do I need to be “good at navigation” before I start?
No. You need to be comfortable as a certified diver, and we build skills step-by-step—from basic headings to multi-leg patterns and combined techniques.
What if visibility is poor or the bottom looks the same everywhere?
That’s exactly when these skills matter. You’ll learn how to combine compass techniques with subtle natural cues and disciplined distance estimation to stay oriented.
Do I need my own compass?
A compass is required. You can bring your own or rent if available. We’ll confirm options and make sure your setup is easy to read and use underwater.
What if conditions aren’t suitable on the scheduled day?
Safety comes first. We may reschedule, change sites, or adjust objectives based on conditions and any third-party policies.
What if skills take longer than expected?
We don’t rush navigation practice. If you want additional training time or extra dives, we can add sessions; extra time and third-party fees may apply.
Will this help with wreck or drift diving?
Yes. Strong navigation improves team coordination, route planning, and returns—valuable in many environments. We’ll tailor examples and patterns to the kind of diving you do most.
Ready to Get Started?
